Member of the European Parliament, Ewa Klamt visit Cyprus and CMP

(Nicosia, 11 May 2007) – Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Ms. Ewa Klamt is visiting Cyprus from the 1st to the 4th of October 2007, following her appointment by the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) as Member responsible for following the development on the “Missing Persons in Cyprus”.
Her appointment follows the adoption of resolution (B6-0118/2007) on the issue of the missing persons in Cyprus by the European Parliament last March. In her capacity as rapporteur of the LIBE Committee, she is entrusted with following all issues related to the problems of missing persons in Cyprus, from a humanitarian perspective. According to the resolution of the European Parliament, her work should be undertaken in close cooperation with the Commission.
The Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus welcomes MEP Ewa Klamt’s appointment and will do its utmost to facilitate her mission in Cyprus. She will meet with people from both communities concerned with the issue of the persons unaccounted for, including relatives of missing persons and representatives of family associations, as well as officials of the CMP. She will also tour the CMP anthropological laboratory in the United Nations Protected Area and visit exhumation sites on each sides of the cease-fire line.
