PRESS RELEASE
(Nicosia, 2 December 2010) – The Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP) found remains of 14 (fourteen) individuals after it resumed its exhumation efforts at Sykhari area.
After two weeks of suspension due to unearthing of unexploded artillery shells early September 2010, the UN demining experts checked and cleared the area and the CMP exhumation teams resumed working at the alleged burial places.
The terrain is large and mountainous and the exhumation requires substantial technical investment and manpower, but the CMP will continue its efforts in the area until all the burial places that the CMP has information about are investigated thoroughly.
The CMP thanks its scientists for their unabated commitment and hard work and commends the efficiency of the UN demining experts.
The Members of the CMP sympathize with the anxiety of relatives of missing persons and understand their wish to find out the fate of their loved ones the soonest possible. The CMP asks the families to have patience and note that the process is complex and time-consuming.
The CMP once again appeals to all concerned and especially those who have any information about missing persons to come forward.
