PRESS RELEASE
(Nicosia, 12 October 2006) – The Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus met formally this morning to discuss the progress made to date with regard to its project on the Exhumation, Identification and Return of Remains of Missing Persons.
The CMP, having secured the necessary funding, has proceeded with the extension of its contract with the Argentinean Forensic Anthropology Team (EAAF).
Since the end of August, some fifty remains of missing individuals have been exhumed and approximately twenty-four have undergone anthropological analysis at the CMP laboratory located in the United Nations Protected Area (Old Nicosia Airport). The transfer of remains to the laboratory is ongoing. A further transfer of the remains believed to be of Greek Cypriot individuals is planned for tomorrow. It is foreseen that all the exhumed remains of missing persons will be stored at the CMP laboratory in the near future.
The CMP has set up most of the mechanisms of the project and is proceeding with the training of its bi-communal team of anthropologists and archaeologists. Over the next few days, the CMP is aiming to finalise remaining agreements with external partners to be involved in the project.
The associations for relatives of missing persons from both communities visited the CMP anthropological laboratory this week, in order to be fully informed of the processes involved in the identification of their loved ones. Interested Ambassadors have also been visiting the premises.
