PRESS RELEASE
(Nicosia, 1 March 2007) – The Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP) wishes to inform the media that its Project on the Exhumation, Identification and Return of Remains is progressing satisfactorily.
Ongoing exhumations are being carried out by the CMP bi-communal team of scientists, under the guidance of the Argentine Team of Forensic Anthropology (EAAF), in both Strovolos and the Kyrenia region. To date, remains believed to belong to 3 individuals have been found in Strovolos and to 4 individuals in Kyrenia.
The CMP urges the media to provide responsible coverage of this sensitive and tragic issue so as to avoid causing additional distress to the relatives of missing persons. In particular, the CMP requests that the media avoid entering into speculation regarding the possible identity of individuals exhumed.
