Bi-communal teams

The entire project is carried out by bi-communal teams of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot scientists.

International archaeologists and anthropologists from the Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team (EAAF) coordinated and trained the CMP bi-communal team of Cypriot scientists involved in exhumations and anthropological analysis. The latter gradually acquired greater independence until reaching full autonomy. Over 55 members of the CMP bi-communal team are currently involved in exhumation work all over the island and 9 are involved in anthropological analysis at the CMP laboratory located within the United Nations Protected Area (Old Nicosia Airport).

From the start of the project in August 2006 until the end of 2007, while EAAF was actively involved in the coordination of the project, three training sessions with renowned forensic experts flown-in from abroad were organised for the benefit of the Cypriot scientists. In 2008 and 2009, scientists from the CMP Bi-communal Forensic Team working at the CMP anthropological laboratory attended one training course provided by the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) in Bosnia-Herzegovina and one training course at the Central Identification Laboratory of the Joint Prisoners Of War - Missing In Action Accounting Command (JPAC) in Hawaii, USA. In addition, the CMP Bi-communal Forensic Team received additional specialised training on various topics, including First Aid and Health and Safety in the field (training provided by the International Committee of the Red Cross).

Since the beginning of 2008, the BCFT has been carrying out exhumations autonomously (6 teams in the north and 2 teams in the south). EAAF forensic experts continue to be involved in the project for quality control purposes.
