Phase IV - Return of Remains

1. Identification Process

The positive and formal identification of the skeletal remains of a missing person is reached by the Scientific Reconciliation Team (SRT), consisting of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot scientists working at the CING LabFoG and at the CMP anthropological laboratory, once the DNA identification process is conclusive and shows no contradiction with or is corroborated by the outcome of the anthropological analyses.

2. Return of Remains of Missing Individuals

Once the CMP has received formal notification of a positive identification, the families concerned are informed without delay by the respective Cypriot Members of the Committee.

Families notified of the identification of their missing relative(s) are offered the possibility to meet with scientists involved in the identification process and to view the remains in a facility located next to the CMP anthropological laboratory in the United Nations Protected Area in Nicosia.

The remains of the identified individuals are formally returned to the relatives concerned. Each family receives a contribution from the CMP towards the funeral costs. Additionally, the respective Cypriot Members of the CMP will try to assist with practical organisational requirements if necessary.

A team of psychologists from each community aims to provide psycho-social support to family members at various key stages of the process. This support is also available upon request by a family member of a missing person at any moment.
