Phase III - Genetic Phase

The Laboratory of Forensic Genetics (LabFoG) of the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics (CING) in Nicosia is responsible for carrying out the Genetics phase (DNA analysis and matching) of the CMP project.

                          CING Building

The CING Laboratory of Forensic Genetics scientific team involved in the current CMP project is composed of 6 Greek Cypriot as well as 3 Turkish Cypriot scientists (the Turkish Cypriot scientists acting as visiting collaborators).  Genetic profiles generated by the analysis of DNA extracted from skeletal elements are compared with the genetic profiles of the relatives of missing persons to reveal individualized identifications.

The collection of blood samples from relatives of the Turkish Cypriot Missing and further DNA extraction was carried out at the Turkish Cypriot laboratory (Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu Hospital). The DNA profiles of the relatives of the Greek Cypriot missing persons were established a few years ago by the CING.

The first skeletal specimens of the CMP project were submitted to the CING Laboratory of Forensic Genetics at the beginning of April 2007 and were identified by the end of June 2007.
